Founded in 1948, IUCN has become the global authority on the status of the natural world and the measures needed to safeguard it.

All of the species that are discussed on this website will show its current status with the IUCN. This website is not only about information, but also about conservation and education about aquatic life. Encouraging you to do what is right by these species, to protect and enjoy them, and to ensure they will last for generations to come.

Above you will see the scale which the IUCN uses to determine the vulnerability of a species, where the three in the center are considered to be of concern with their habitats or populations threatened. A handful of aquarium fish are already in the Vulnerable (VU) category with even a few approaching the Endangered (EN) realm.

It is critical we do what we can as fish-keepers to protect these species, and educate ourselves as to their ethical and responsible capture in the wild to preserve their stocks.
